As the last traces of suntan finally vanish completely and the woolly mittens come down from the attic, it's hard to remember the vibrant optimism and anticipation of spring. But for those of us that like to stay one step ahead of the fashion game, now is the time to start planning for Spring-Summer 2009. The season's trends are set to be all about accessories and golden bling so read on to find out what's going to be hot when the temperatures start climbing again.
Heads Up
Head gear is set to be to 2009 what that gladiator sandal was to 2008 - that is, the must have item of the summer. Every catwalk from New York to Milan has been positively brimming with hats, headscarves and hair bands so take note if you want to get a-head in the fashion stakes next season. For a fun but subtle adaptation of the catwalk extremes, go for a trilby in a natural tone and tie it in with your outfit using different coloured ribbon trimmings. A great option if you're not quite sure about hats is Topshop's felt trilby, which comes in a variety of bold colours and won't break the bank.
If hats just aren't your thing then go for bright headscarves in the season's hot colours instead. Bright neons, gold or muted natural shades are set to be the themes of the season and headscarves are a great way to subtly add a bit of up-to-the-minute colour to your otherwise monochrome office wear. Having said that, monochrome is also going to be one of the themes of the season so you can even take cutting edge style to the boardroom.
Golden Girls
Gold is sure to be one of the hottest colours of next season, showing up everywhere from dresses and tops to shoes and belts. If you're ready to take this extravagant new trend to the limits, go all out with a glitzy golden gown accessorised with black shoes and clutch bag for a sensational red carpet look.
If you want to add just a touch of bling to your wardrobe then try teaming your favourite little black dress with a gold leather belt and strappy sandals then accentuate the golden tones with shimmery eye shadows and strong, dark lashes. This option is perfect for combining timeless elegance with a modern twist for a formal function or wedding.
Giant Jewels
When it comes to jewellery, next season's maxim is going to be 'the bigger the better'. The models of Marc Jacobs, Christian Lacroix and Marni were all spotted ornamented with outrageously outsized jewellery this year. Earrings, necklaces and brooches are all going to be larger than life, so stock up on chunky wooden earrings or large and elaborate necklaces as soon as this striking new look hits the High Streets.
So now your wardrobe is ready for next season use the winter to play around with the variety of fabulous new styles on the market; just remember not to try to do too much at once. For example, if you're mad about millinery but want to try a large necklace, choose a simple hat and team with an unadorned top or dress for maximum impact. Experimenting with new trends is always great fun and next season looks set to be no exception.
